Subject: Doctorate in Persian Language and Literature, University of Karachi.

 Dear Ali Jafarey:

This letter is sent to you in the spirit of inquiry and good faith. Please note that nothing in this letter should be construed to be slanderous, libel or defamatory in nature. We are merely trying to ascertain the truth and thereby put to rest the rumors that have been circulating about the subject issue for many years.

As you well know, ever since the early 1990s, you have in all your published biographical data attached to your publications and also in conference proceedings, listed yourself as possessing a Doctorate in Persian Language and Literature from the University of Karachi. This claim has spanned a period starting at least in 1990 with your bio-data in the Proceedings of the Seventh North American Zoroastrian Conference, Houston, to as late as the Fall 2000 issue of the FEZANA Journal.

We have recently come into possession of a letter from the University of Karachi, dated September 18, 2000. This letter, signed by the Registrar of the University categorically states: "As we have gone through the record and would like to inform you that neither Mr. Ali A. Jafarey has been enrolled for Ph.D. nor he has been granted Ph.D. degree in Persian Language and Persian Literature."

This statement appears to be in direct contradiction of your claim. However, knowing that there is always the possibility of error on the part of the University of Karachi, we are requesting you to present us with a copy of your doctoral certificate. If for some reason you do not have the certificate in your possession, please provide us with any other information such as the year of graduation, Department, Doctoral thesis title, the name of your Doctoral Preceptors, or any other similar information, which could be forwarded to the University for verification.

Since every individual is proud of the effort and achievement of completing a doctoral degree, we are sure that you should have no hesitation in sharing with us a copy of your certificate of your accomplishment. We are therefore requesting that you send us a copy of the certificate by certified, recorded mail to reach us by Monday, October 23, 2000. You may send this to:

If you wish, you may send us the requested information by e-mail to:

 jalnb@mediaone.net

We feel that by sending us this information we may be able to redress an inaccurate finding by the University of Karachi. We will then be able to put all rumors to rest by ensuring that the public is informed that you do indeed have your doctorate degree in Persian Language and Literature from the University of Karachi.

We must, at the same time, also inform you that if we do not hear from you by the date stated above, we would have to assume that the information from the University of Karachi is correct. We then reserve the right to make that information also available to the public at an appropriate time in the future. If you do have the information we see no reason for you not to share it with us.

Again, please treat this letter as simply an inquiry into learning the truth. We look forward to hearing from you soon.

 Very truly yours,

 Jal N. Birdy,
VP. TMZA.

Dear Ervad Saheb:

Sahebji!

I have your e-mail of << Date: 10/16/00 11:40:49 PM Pacific Daylight  Time>> with the clause <<…. We are therefore requesting that you send us a copy of the certificate by certified, recorded mail to reach us by Monday, October 23, 2000. … We must, at the same time, also inform you that if we do not hear from you by the date stated above, we would have to assume that the information from the University of Karachi is correct. We then reserve the right to make that information also available to the public at an appropriate time in the future.>>

I am wondering as to what has made you change your organization’s eleven-year-old policy from  “exposing me to the public only through uproar by a team of priests, scholars, journalists and magnifying mouthpieces” to a polite personal letter. I prefer your old policy. Therefore, I would be glad to respond after you make it <<available to the public>> at your <<appropriate time.>> The public will automatically have the ENTIRE TRUTH at its full disposal.

Awaiting your reaction,

Ali A. Jafarey

Subject: FEZANA’s Special Event at the WZC2000 and Ali A. Jafarey

Dear President:

In light of the fact that FEZANA has decided to sponsor a special event at the WZC2000 where Ali Jafarey will be a speaker, we would like to bring to your attention an issue, which should be of grave concern to the community.

This letter is being sent to you in good faith to apprise you of a situation, which is potentially harmful to our community. Nothing in this letter should be construed to be slanderous, libelous or defamatory in nature. We are merely trying to ascertain the truth and thereby put to rest the rumors that have been circulating about this issue for many years.

Ever since the early 1990s, Ali Jafarey has, in all his published biographical data attached to his publications and also in conference proceedings, listed himself as possessing a Doctorate in Persian Language and Literature from the University of Karachi. This claim has spanned a period starting at least in 1990 with his bio-data in the Proceedings of the Seventh North American Zoroastrian Conference, Houston, to as late as the Fall -2000 issue of the FEZANA Journal.

We have recently come into possession of a letter from the University of Karachi, which states: "… we have gone through the record and would like to inform you that neither Mr. Ali A. Jafarey has been enrolled for Ph.D. nor he has been granted Ph.D. degree in Persian Language and Persian Literature."

This statement appears to be a direct contradiction of Ali Jafarey's claim. However, knowing that there is always the possibility of error on the part of the University of Karachi, we sent a personal email to Ali Jafarey requesting him to provide us with any information, which would contradict the letter from the University of Karachi. We sent this email to him privately, hoping to keep this issue confidential. Mr. Jafarey replied to us with a rather terse and devious email, neither confirming nor denying the allegation.

We are now left with Ali Jafarey implying in his response to us that he holds a Ph.D. from Karachi University, while the Karachi University is clearly saying "not true". Either Ali Jafarey is not telling us the truth or the University records are wrong. We would like to know the truth.

Whether Mr. Jafarey holds a Ph.D. from Karachi University in Persian Literature or any other subject is not at issue here. What is important is that, if he has been deceiving the community for all these years, we cannot knowingly condone this behavior particularly from a person who considers himself a "Zoroastrian Scholar" and who is engaged in generating much controversy and discord within our community. Most importantly we cannot send the message to our youth that lying is O.K.

We requested the FEZANA President to verify the truth before allowing Mr. Jafarey to speak, but as usual he and his committee have given us their legal mumbo-jumbo and have shrugged the matter off as being inconsequential and merely wasting their time.

We feel it our duty now to bring this matter to the attention of the community for which purpose a web site (http://frontpage.netropolis.net/scottcom/ ) has been established by a separate group of concerned Zarathushtis, who are not members of TMZA. We urge you to visit this site to appraise the facts for yourself. We hope you will then try to obtain hard documentary evidence from Mr. Jafarey to arrive at the truth and once and for all put an end to all the doubt and mystery surrounding this issue. If Mr. Jafarey is found to be lying, then FEZANA should be asked to withdraw their invitation to him.

This letter is being copied to Mr. Jafarey also. We think a time limit of four days should be more than adequate for him to supply the community with hard documentary evidence, which can be corroborated by the University of Karachi.

We now leave it in your hands and on your conscience to act appropriately.

Sincerely,

Ervad Jal N. Birdy
Vice President, TMZA
