Dear Framroze,
Sir, it is with great regret that I have to write this
letter. It is my understanding that at the World Zoroastrian Congress in
Houston, Mr. Ali Jaffrey, has been given a platform and invited to speak. I
happen to be a Board Member of the Traditional Zoroastrian Mailing List, whose
membership totals in the region of approximately 250. The membership encompasses
highly respectable and devoutly traditionalist people spanning all 5 continents.
Feelings across the whole world are running very high that a person of the ilk
of Mr. Jaffrey, should not be in the same city where the Zoroastrian Congress is
taking place, let alone be invited to utter his blasphemies against our beloved
religion at the Congress.
Mr. Jaffrey has always undermined our glorious faith and
the religious beliefs of our community by proclaiming that the Avesta prayers
that we have recited with zest and devotion throughout the centuries are now
suddenly of dubious nature and only good for historical interest. This man has
time and again ridiculed every facet of our scriptures and plays a central role
in the unauthorised conversion of people from other faiths. He adopts the mantle
of a self-proclaimed priest. This I submit is nothing short of heresy.
It is my understanding from reliable sources, that Ms. Dolly Dastoor al an AGM in Kansas, actually cancelled the entire educational event where Mr. Jaffrey was due to take part.
?hat decision should stand even today. It is also my understanding, that under a revised constitution of FEZ4NA it was thought as right and proper for any scholar to speak at a Congress. I have no particular problem with this revision per se, however, there are scholars and there are scholars. I would travel a million miles to hear Professor Mary Boyce, Professor John Hinnels of Manchester, UK, Dr. Almut Hintze. These sir, are scholars who have had a tremendous influence on some of our own Zoroastrian Scholars.
Wada Dasturji's Jamasp Asa, Firoze Kotwal, and Nadirshaw
Unwalia, Khojeste Mistree, Ervad Dr.Ramiyar Karanjia, etc. etc. hold these 3 in
very high esteem indeed. I can assure you that in London, I would not give Mr.
Jaf~ey the time of day, let alone invite him to speak at our Zoroastrian House,
and in doing so corrupt the innocent minds of our young. I have been on the
Managing Committee of the Zoroastrian Trust Funds of Europe Inc. for the past 14
years, and it would be unthinkable for this august organisation to give this
heretic a platform. Mr. Jaffrey has hurt, besmirched, and ridiculed the same
very religion, that he purports to know so much about.
Sir, 1 have heard a lot about you, you yourself are fiom a
very, very respectable and orthodox family from Surat and no one for a second
doubts your credentials about which side of the fence your feelings lie when it
comes to propagating our sublime religion in its true and pristine form. and it
is with this in mind. that I and the undersigned, whom 1 have personally canvassed
and spoken to urge, beg and beseech you to use your good offices not to allow
such persons as Mr. Jaffrey to be allowed to be anywhere near the Congress let
alone speak. I further assure you that many such letters of protest will be coming
your way from all over the globe, viz. India, Australia, United Arab Amirates, Canada,
United Kingdom, etc. etc. Should you wishverification of the addresses and phone
numbers of the undersigned, I would be only too happy to provide. Theyare a
cross section of the community in London, Ervads, Behdins. the senior citizens
and the Youth, have all gladly given me their assent to append their names to
this letter and if it were not for time constraints I would have canvassed a
1000 people.
May DADAR AHURAMAZDA give you strength and wisdom to do
what you have to and must do.
